The Wonders of the North Coast

We headed out relatively early to see what the "hidden" places were like here on th enorth coast of Kauai. The first place was right up next to the St. Regis hotel in Princeville , just outside the gatehouse. There is a parking lot for only 7 or 8 cars and we were fortunate to snag the only empty slot. Then a steep path down the cliff with ropes to hang on to took us to Hideaway Beach. There were only two couples and a lone surfer on the beach. The beach was beautiful and would have been a great snorkeling location but of course we left the snorkel gear up in the car. The funny part was a small shower came across the beach while we were there. Daytime rain here has been like a light mist, barely noticeable. (Night rains are typically a deluge). The two couples grabbed their towels and ran for cover, god forbid you get wet at the beach!

From there we followed the streets through the Princeville development. These are all very nice condos and single homes, with a fabulous golf course at one end of the community, all perched up abut 120 feet above the ocean. We came to another small lot at the end of a street, these are hidden, no signs, you find them by looking in the "Hidden Kauai" book. This trail went down to the Queens Bath, a natural salt water pool in the volcanic rock shoreline. The hike down and the pool were way beyond what I was expecting. From a really picturesque waterfall to snorkeling and jumping into the pool to watching the multitude of sea turtles (photo of sea turtel with his head above water) in the surf off of the rocks, it was really fabulous - and free.

The next day, Monday, we headed out to the South coast, where we have always stayed before. Kathy got to check out several quilt shops , we had smoothies and we stopped by the spouting horn. We had lunch at Tomcats Grille, one of our favorites in Koloa, then back to Anini Beach for a great sunset, right across the street.

  1. I'm glad you found Hideaways and Queen's Bath. Aren't they gorgeous? We walked to both those spots from our condo. Glen liked surfing at Hideaways. You take great photos, but it's easy to be a good photographer in Kauai! You're doing well at keeping the horizon horizontal. :)

  2. Tomcats!! Great spot...we went there on your recommendation two years ago.

That turtle picture with his head above water may just end up as a canvas print in Aedan's room. That's an excellent shot. Amazing places that you've found along the way...
